The sailor who died when the yacht ‘Bille’ was dismasted in strong winds during the Cape2Rio Race has been named as 47 year old António João Bartolomeu, a 47 year old radio sound technician from Angola.
Bartolomeu was thrown overboard from the Bavaria 54 during the ferocious storm that battered the fleet with high winds within hours of the start of the race from Cape Town, South Africa.
Bartolomeu was retrieved unconscious by his crew mates but died shortly afterwards. The cause of death is thought to be hypothermia.
Two other members of the crew suffered injuries during the incident, including the skipper Luis Manuel De Oliveira Da Silva who sustained broken ribs.
Da Silva and the rest of the ‘Bille’ crew were subsequently taken off their stricken yacht by the crew of the naval frigate ‘Islandwana’ which had been scrambled from Cape Town at the request of the race organisers, the Royal Cape Yacht Club.
